Max Schmeling – Das Herz Eines Boxers

A tale of three men brought together to sing this song in 1930 in the film Liebe in Ring. Max Schmeling used by Nazi Propaganda and then dumped by Hitler when he didnt join the Nazi Party. He was put into the Fallschirmjaeger and made to jump over Crete when suffering from dyssentry. Wounded he ended the war helping other wounded soldiers at a rehabilitation hospital. He was interned but later it came to light he had risked his life by saving two Jewish boys called Lewin. He hid them in his hotel room on Krystallnacht and then smuggled them out of Germany to New York. He became a strong friend to Joe Louis and often gave him money to keep him out of poverty. He bought the Coca-Cola franchise in Germany and became a huge philanthropist. Kurt Gerron fared far worse for he was Jewish. He became an actor in the early 1920s but turned down Hollywood offers to remain in Europe. He left Germany but was later captured and sent to Theresienstadt Concentration camp, being forced to make a propaganda film for the Nazis about how good Theresienstadt was, a city given as a present by Hitler to the Jews. He left on the last train from there to Auschwitz where he did not survive the first day. Hugo Fischer-Koppe started in films in 1917 aged 27. In the next 20 years he appeared in 80 films and died prematurely in Berlin in 1937.

Interviewer: Your new album is called Humanoid. What was the main theme? Bill: Yeah, it’s a shame that an album doesn’t have a subject. There are many subjects that were inspired by our lives, our environment and things that happened during the year where we’ve worked on the new CD. Interviewer: How would you describe the perfect Tokio Hotel fan? Bill: The perfect fan enjoys listening to our music and also likes what we do, however they don’t download our music illegally on the internet. Interviewer: We’ve just recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, [how] does this inspire you? Tom: For us, it isn’t really that important. We grew up in a reunified Germany. We have heard/been told of this episode, but we did not live it. Interviewer: The futuristic project (?) for the disc represents Humanoid for you, and it has a certain melancholy to it that is almost frightening. What do you guys think? Bill: Yes, but young people reflect on life, and sometimes it happens to be sad. They can worry and therefore create a certain sadness, melancholy; but on this album there are also the happier songs. In fact, it’s very mixed. Tom: And you know that we are also young, and this album reflects on us. Interviewer: You guys have just realeased the album in two languages, German and English. Did you have any difficulties in particular re-recording your songs from German to English? Bill: This time we’ve written and produced the album in two languages. Before …
